Allows you to use USB mass-storage media devices in Songbird
1.0.4:
– updated for 0.4 release
Allows you to use any device that supports USB Mass Storage as a portable device that you can
manage media on. From a USB stick to an
Archos to a Creative MuVo. As long as it can be configured to act
like a UMS device, this add-on will be
able to help you manage your media on it.
Windows only for now. Should work on Windows 2000, XP, XP x64 and
Vista (minimal testing on Vista).
Now works with Songbird 0.2.5 RC1!

Awesome! Still buggy, but works reliably on first-run. You can add and remove tracks, but you can't copy tracks from the device just yet. Still, if you want just basic USB support, this is it.
Actually you can't add or remove tracks.
The new version uploaded should be a lot more reliable with first run device detection. It also copies tracks to your library. Yay!
That's now fixed too. :)
Hey guys, it works with Songbird 0.2.5RC1 now too! :)
That _is_ great ! Thanks Aus :) Have you planned to add the "Edit" function to this addon ?
I tried using this add-on with my Creative Zen Vision:M, but can not figure out how to get it to work. When I went to the Options/USB it says that no mass storage device is connected. Any suggestions?
I think you will have to switch your device from MTP mode to UMS or Hard Disk mode for my UMS Add-on to work with it. If that option is available it should be under the Options/Preferences on the device itself.

Excellent! A must have. Makes all my misc USB devices usable!
When will there be a mac version?
Yes, there will be. I have no time estimate right now though, sorry. I will post here when I have more deets.
Will the Mac version allow to use mp3 phones? I have a nice nokia, and only found synctunes, but it does not allow to change target directory that much...
It won't recognize my Sansa e260. It's set on MSC (mass storage as opposed to MTP). I've never had trouble using my Sansa as mass storage before, so I can't imagine what's up here. Songbird says "No USB mass storage devices are connected." Hmm....
Weird. I've only tested using the Sansa e270. It's very close to what you have though, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. I'll try and get the folks at Sandisk to send me an e260 :)
I installed the USB mass storage extension, then connected a Samsung YP-Z5 2gb mp3 portable player by USB & Songbird wouldnt recognize the device. I clicked the extension's option & a funky "title bar only" window popped up without any options to choose from. I'll check back on fixes later.
I'm having the same problem with the e260. Sometimes it recognizes it and sometimes not. When it does, it will not update the tracks I have on it and if I try to move tracks to it they sit in the transfer queue but never actually download.
Linux support would also be much appreciated. Thanks for taking the effort.
Hello--I've just downloaded songbirdnest for windows xp. i have an iaudio g3 cowon player, and can get songbird to recognize files i've put on the player using winamp, but can't figure out how to get files (and particularly playlists) from songbird onto the player....what am i missing? thanks, jrat
You can copy stuff onto your device by selecting it in the Library and drag/dropping it onto the entry in the service pane (left pane) for your device.
Hi, I have just downloaded the usb-mass storage extension and connected my creative labs zen touch. Nothing happened though, the player didn'nt get recognised by songbird. A shame, I have just downloaded songbird recently and like the look of it. I find its strength lies in the strong integration of web resources. iTunes still has one big advantage and that is the print out of tracklists in different layouts. MediaMonkey is strong due to its integration of a complete file tree including "MyDocuments" etc. Its useful. Usb mass storage works with their plugin straight away. It would be great if songbird could develope all those features and be the best mediaplayer around. Does a a wish list exist? I would be pleased for any advise on how to get the connection (between my mp3 player and songbird) going. Thanks
I have all my my music running from an external hard drive which is being recognised as my USB device. It is working fine this way but, Is there any way of having multiple USB devices recognised? So I can transfer music from my USB - external hard drive to my USB - phone.
You should be able to simply plug in your second USB device and have it come up as well.
Any word on mac/linux support yet? This work great on my windows machine, and I really want it on my mac.
ok, now songbird recognizes the player, recognizes songs already on the player, allows me to drag/drop onto the player, starts a transfer queue, but never makes any 'download progress.' hmmn. oh well.
Tried this with an Nokia N95 in mass storage mode.
I set the copy music files directory to be G:SoundsDigital where I already had mp3s.
It picked up files from G:Private20001f63englishenglish_female which is sat nav voices but not the music.
I then dragged some mp3s from the library to the device and it placed the files in G: :(
it doesn't work with my toshiba gigabeat f-series
How do you add songs to your MP3?
Oh no! :( That must be a bug. Did you right-click on the Nokia n95 and go into the preferences to set the Music files directory? You can always file a bug here: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com against the "Portable Devices: USB Mass Storage" component. :) I will try and get a Nokia N95 to test with as well. Thanks for your feedback :)
Is there any chance this will be able to handle 3.0pre?
I know im having probs with my phillips goGear too
I will have an 0.3pre compatible version posted here in the next week or two. *fingers crossed* :)
PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX PLEASE MAKE A VERSION TO MAC OSX
Oh Yes. Pretty please with sugar on top (sorry, just watched Pulp Fiction)
Will there be a linux version?
Any luck with that pre0.3 version? Thanks
Hi I think this plug-in is really awesome. The question is what's required to get a new version for .3pre. I've try both versions and there is not support for MP3 players on the new one yet.
I just downloaded and installed Songbird 0.3.1pre and very few add-ons including this one work - can someone please provide a fix? I would love to be able to sync to my Blackberry Curve which now has a 4GB flash card.
im totally new at this but i just downloaded this program the one on the website and i cant download the usb mass storage device why is that?
This Usb mass storage add on doesn't install. It keeps saying that this it's not compatible with Songbird. I have the latest version? Any ideas?
I'm at the latest version of songbird as well and have a sony mp3 player that is a USB storage device. Would love to try this addon :)
Your version of songbird is too new. =P This add-on was designed for an older version of Songbird, and .xpi installers have their compatible software version numbers built in, which means it will refuse to install on a version it doesn't recognise, even if it could possibly work correctly. It might be as simple as adding 0.3.* to the .xpi, or it might be as complex as a compelt code change.
this would be great for the 0.3.* build *hint hint* i would if i could :(
stayed with version 0.2.5 for some time to use this add-on but it didn’t really work, as I couldn’t manage the usb-device’s content. files arrived there, but sort of “in the blue”. I was very happy to see the new version of the add-on now and tried it with songbird 0.3: the usb is not being recognized and when I remove it while the program is running, it causes a crash bang boom!.. why is that?
Hi and first I really want to thank you for your work,
Here are a few problems I have with the add-on:
–with songbird 0.3.1 (Windows XP SP2), I can’t get my mp3 stick detected : when I plug it while songbird is running, it crashes; and when I plug it before running songbird, it won’t be detected.
With songbird 0.4rc2 my mp3 stick was successfully detected (great !).
–But I think there is a problem with the “Music” and the “Video” directories. My mp3 stick letter is ‘G’, so the add-on automatically set the values ‘g:’ for those ‘Music’ and ‘Video’ directories. But I had to change those values to ‘G:’ to be able to copy files from my library on my mp3 stick. With the default value ‘g:’, the songs I added from my main library were added to the MP3 library, but the files were not transfered on my device. And yes, I checked “Songbird shouldmanage this device”.
Thanks again-The files copied on the mp3 stick have bad encoded names... for example, the initial file was 'Beyoncé - Irreplaceable.mp3' and once transfered on my device it was 'beyonc%c3%a9%20-%20irreplaceable.mp3'
I hope this will help to make the add-on better.
Hello Everyone!
I’m using the latest build on a new iMAC with OSX version 10.4.11.
I have a SANSA E-280 MP3 player and can’t find the method to sync it with Songbird. I did find a mass storage add-on but it stated that it does not support the OS in use.
Can my player, OS and Songbird work together? if so. how?
Thanks in advance!
I’m having a bit of trouble with the Sony NWZ-A818 under Vista and 0.5 ver. It doesn’t appear to be detecting it. I’ve tried it in XP and it works fine. Does anyone know how to change the Sony’s from MTP to UMS?
Cheers, great plugin!!
This really ought to be embedded in one of the next Songbird releases.
It’s work on my Motolora E680i. I love this plugin, it make me easy to drag and drop song from library to my phone.
By the way, next improvement i suggest to umount usb from sondbird.
Thanks for great pulgin
I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra and i have been looking for a decent WIndows Media Player replacement for a long time. Songbird appears to be the best potential replacement I have found. Unfortunately, my four-and-a-half-year-old device only supports MTP for transfers (which is bizarre as the playsforsure spec requires MSC support).
ANYWAY would implementation of MTP in songbird be possible?
Are there any news about a Mac version? I’m using a Sansa e250 and looked forward to use Songbird for this device :–(
Anyway, Songbird is a great software but strongly needs to work with Mac on this area.
Any word yet on Linux support?
I’m running into the same problem as RackHam. I’ve got a Sansa e270 set to MSC mode, and when I drop files on, they seem to be fine. However, once i unplug, all the files i have added are in the artist menu “unknown” with the file naming convention like RackHaM described. None of them will play
Once I plug back into songbird, the Sansa library shows that the files are there (with the correct ID3 Tags), but the ones I’ve added through Songbird are unplayable. Songs not added through Songbird (stuff i tossed on from another computer running amarok) play just fine.
Aus, since you have a Sansa e270, do you have any words of wisdom for me?
Is there a Linux support planned ?
Works like Magic

Doesn’t work with 0.5…
Make this work with 0.5 please, or better yet, integrate it into SB
Does not work in 0.5 although listed under the 0.5 filter!
So unless i have an ipod i cant use songbird to sync to my device!!??
sounds just like that other evil software i am trying to get away from! (rhymes with snapple fry prunes)
hrrrmf.
We need this to work with .5!!
Will this support Flash Media as well? Like Secure Digital cards?
got an error
“USB mass-storage device 1.0.4-20080304 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 0.5”
please help
Erad Mayan
wont let me download it =(
maybe u should try make it work with 0.5 version
cant download it
word on mac support of creative vision m ??
+1 for a linux version!
Any roadmap for that one right now?
Will this be out for the .6 version of songbird........thanks
I really, really hope this comes out for .6. Much needed!
I really hope this gets updates so it's downloadable very soon. I need it!
Please, please, make this work again!
It's on second place of most downloaded add-ons, even it is has not been updated for nearly half a year!
It was my most important Add-on, offering a feature no other Media-Player could give me.
I would love to here news on this...
Why hasn't this been updated?
Sure, the MTP add on is here now, but not all devices are compatible with MTP... Such as my phone :(.
Can you work on this extension to make it compatible with SB 0.7 ? It would be awesome !!!
Surely this is an essential part of the software? I've personally voted 5 for all your efforts. I hope you get a great deal of help, the software on the whole seems good but USB support, is a need to have.
When I heard about this software I was so hoping it could sync up my USB based MP3 player. Really wished this worked :(
Back to Winamp for me then.
Please update it to work on the newest version. This would make songbird the best software in the world!!!! PLEASE!!
Please update this plugin to work on Linux and Mac OS X and with 0.7.0 -- many many of us have UMS devices and even your fellow open source brothers who use the Rockbox firmware on their music playing devices all work via UMS. Surely this couldn't take a Songbird developer much more than a week to get it working nicely again. I understand internal interfaces have changed but likely for the better and to make plugins like this even easier.
Please update for 0.7.0 and include support for Linux and Mac OS X.
update please!!!!
Would love to see this plug-in on OS X as well.
is there any intention to continue development of this for 0.7?
It is really strange that nobody from songbird with an explanation about the reason this extension is not upgraded any more. I think that they should be working in a new way of working with usb devices (I remember to have seen the source of this extensions with comments in this way). At least this is what I want to believe. In other case I will have to change to other media player.
Sorry I have seen that this extension is tagged as deprecated.
What about a new version?
Hey! There's what I need! USB Device support... but I can't use it with the 1.0 beta client... an update? Pretty please?
Please comment on the bug :
